This past year, education was hit particularly hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a massive disruption to education access. For the most vulnerable children living on the frontlines of conflict, disaster and displacement, education provides safety and protection, and instills hope for a brighter future.

In response to this unprecedented humanitarian and health crisis, ECW and its partners have supported girls and boys in accessing continuing education through alternative learning pathways and remote learning, helped governments and communities to get children back to the safety of schools, and expanded support for water and sanitation services that reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

In Uganda, Education Cannot Wait provided funding for educational continuity for refugees and host communities impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak. Refugee boys and girls received home learning materials, radios, learning packs and other support materials to keep them engaged, prevent them from dropping out, getting married early, or being forced to start working. Through this support, more than 60,000 refugees and host community children were reached. Of those children, 50,529 received home learning materials or learning packs.
