THE FUTURE SCIENTISTS OF CHAD

With funding from Education Cannot Wait, UNICEF is helping teachers improve science instruction for children impacted by conflict and crisis.

To empower girls and boys with advanced tools and training on science, technology, engineering and math, an Education Cannot Wait-financed programme implemented by UNICEF in Chad is providing budding scientists with school kits, and science materials such squares, compasses and protractors in a pilot school located in the city of Bol. To prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other diseases, handwashing kits have also been distributed.

The investment is having real impact on teachers and students. In this inspiring story from the field, we feature the unique voices and transformational impact science can have on children caught in conflict, emergencies and protracted crises. Learn more about ECW-financed programmes in Chad.

"In the past, we used to struggle. We missed almost everything. For the past 4-5 years, UNICEF has provided remarkable support. We have benefited from school kits, classrooms, human resource support. For this Education Cannot Wait programme, we have received science materials including slates, squares, compasses and registers. The aim is to improve practicing science subjects for both students and teachers. More than 12,000 students are targeted, 40% of whom are girls."

"These science materials enable us to teach better. We can draw the different shapes and give students an idea of a straight line, a 90° line, or a curve."

"Student kits consist of notebooks, pencils, plastic bags, and teacher kits contain squares, compasses, protractors, slates, and brushes. At the pilot school in Bol, a total of 10 teachers and 775 pupils (385 boys and 376 girls) are involved in this distribution. We have also received handwashing kits."
